How to Gain Inspiration

posted in: Inspiration | 0

It’s hard. It can be a challenge. As a designer it’s a MUST to stay inspired, for without that inspiration my work suffers tremendously. I’ve come up with a few ways to stay inspired and I’d like to share them with you all. We all need a little inspiration, eh? So as a designer who is always seeking to be inspired, let me share a few ways that I stay inspired.

1. Unexpected places
I know what you’re thinking, “Ummmm I’m pretty sure that picture is Pinterest and I’m pretty sure Pinterest is not an unexpected place to find inspiration.” If you’ll take a moment and look past the fact that it’s Pinterst, I think you’ll see what I mean. I am a graphic designer, and yet I search for inspiration in unexpected places – like in furniture design, in room decor, in textiles and floor tiles. Anything that at once took some sort of creativity to create can be used as inspiration for any type of creative work. Just use your imagination!

2. Learn from the Pros

There are an endless amount of books specifically written to help you, as a designer, stay focused and inspired. I’ve listed a few above. Take a look!

3. Step Away

Seriously. This helps me every time. I’ve been at my computer for hours, I can’t think anymore, I have to do something else. So I go take a walk, I do some yoga/pilates, or whatever else that is active and the opposite of technology, and it helps tremendously. Removing myself from the place of frustration gives me a chance to refocus, re-evaluate, and reconnect with something that is bigger than me. That way, when I come back to my desk, I’m feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and ready to take on the world! Or at least figure out why my hex formulas are seemingly inaccurate. In the cold winter months, it’s so hard to go outside, so yoga/pilates is a fantastic indoor solution for me! Above is my little mut Chuy – love him to pieces – and I can’t wait for flip flops and pedi weather!

Thanks for stopping by – I hope one of these tips helps you feel inspired again!
